Visually Dazzling

The visuals are dazzling with authentic costumes by Renee April and John Hay, lovely production design by Francois Sequin and beautifully shot by Jan Kiesser plus a kick ass score by Mark Isham. But the rest of the movie is very hollow, I mean the cast and Leigh do a great job performancewise but there isn't a single likable character in the mix with the possible exception of Jennifer Beales as Mrs. Benchley but since she wasn't an "artist" she was regualted as a throwaway character. The snobbery in this film is very difficult to take which hinders one's enjoyment of the picture.

I really liked the movie too. everything about it is amazing. jennifer's and the entire cast's performance is outstanding. the costumes and the setting is really great. i wish there were more movies in the world that were so perfessional and showed so much dedication. robert altman rocks!!

IF I ABSTAIN FROM FUN AND SUCH.

I agree. This is probably not the best movie ever made, but I still love it anyway. The costumes and set designs should have at least earned an academy award nomination. Jennifer Jason Leigh was at her best, and she deserved a nod as well. Some may find her dialogue annoying, but that was the character she was channeling.

Altman was only an executive producer; he would hardly have had anything to do with all the things you admire about the movie. Alan Rudolph is the one who really made it happen; it was his baby from the beginning.
