One minor thing I never quite got...

At the beginning of the movie, Stanley's going through the building, unscrewing one bulb in each light fixture. Is there any particular reason he's doing this? Is it a Christmas thing? Something having to do with all of the eviction notices he's giving out?

Or is it some weird hold-over from the original French version (which I haven't seen) that's better explained there?

I never got this 100% either, but I figured that Stanley was just trying to be stingy and save on lightbulbs! He figured it didn't matter if his tenants' halls weren't brightly lit.

Same thought here, and actually in keeping with his scrooge like character.

He is not removing the bulbs, just untwisting them so they go off. It's a way to save money on electricity. He's a cheap bastard.

reply

I don't think he's stingy, he's just doing it to annoy people (remember he's a pycho "They must drink glass.")

remember he's a pycho[sic]

GDuh! He's the "Seaside Strangler"!

reply

I agree--he was trying to save money on electricity. The fact that it annoyed the tenants was just a bonus.
