What is going to happen is she will live nearby maybe even in the ice cream shop itself ( if there enough space), until the time is right to get married ( remember it is a small town and the guy who Ed Harris punched out is still around). The key line in the movie is where Melanie says there is a place where you can touch a woman the heart ( that is what Harris and his son brought to her). The unconditional love that they gave her is what she she wanted. She did the same thing for him because he was lonely since his wife died and as he said a part of me will die ( if the wetlands were gone).
