Mel Gibson an underrated comedic actor?

I've always thought Mel Gibson was hillarious and not given enough credit for that. Movies like Maverick, Bird on a wire, What Women Want, and especially the Lethal Weapon movies, he cracked me up. He's like Tom Hanks, he can do drama, comedy, action, anything and be fantastic. I wish Mel would make some more movies

fact, fact, and fact.

Mel is a fantastic actor, don't compare him to wooden Tom Hanks

Perhaps it is just a matter of taste, but I think Mel Gibson is one of the most over-rated actors (in any genre) of the postmodern era. His earlier work, when he was fresh out of NIDA, proves he can act. Gibson received critical acclaim for his roles in movies such as 'Tim', 'Gallipoli' and 'The Year of Living Dangerously', and there have been some standout performances since. However, a comedic actor he is not, unless poor imitations of The Three Stooges appeals to you or you are attracted to Gibson's wide-eyed histrionics first demonstrated in the Lethal Weapon franchise. A little more restraint could go a long way but my opinion is that he should stay well clear of comedies, especially those of the B-grade romantic variety.

The whole industry needs to stay clear of romantic comedies, not just Mel Gibson.

Mel Gibson is a very good actor overall, with good range, comedic/drama and such! That's why he is one of the biggest in the business and why he's been on the A-list since the mid 80's!

Gibson is quite underrated.

He does overdo it sometimes (which the editor could sometimes edit out), but his timing & delivery is terrific. He's a hoot in Maverick.

Gibson overdoes it all the time in Maverick. From beginning to end.

Without James Garner, this movie would be all gonzo and no flow. Garner picks this thing up and carries it, which gives Gibson (as usual) and Foster (unusually but she seemed to enjoy doing it) all the freedom in the world to fly off into zaniness.

I'm not saying Garner gets no credit for making this film great. I'm saying it's hard to give him all the credit he deserves for it. Not everyone can play it just straight enough to keep the movie flowing and keep us interested in the plot, and still deliver as many funny lines as the two main clowns do.

That's a rare and wonderful talent, being a hilarious straight man. Grouch Marx, Cary Grant and Bob Newhart were good at that, too.

I think he's amazing, but Jodie Foster isn't that bad either ! She plays very very well and almost steals the show with it... yes, she plays !

Mel's definitely underrated as a comedic actor, that's for sure. He's hysterical when he wants to be. I never realized there were so many light-hearted movies of his out there until I really started watching them. He's basically great at anything he sets his mind to. :)

Great actor! Great director!

Yeah, I agree he is a terrific comedic actor. His performances in this, What Women Want, and even the latter Lethal Weapon sequels go to show just how funny he can be.

Mel's an all around great actor!

Mel is a decent actor. He has played a variety of characters, displayed emotional range, but he's not the best actor around.

In movies like Maverick, the Lethal Weapon series, and others, it's pretty clear he's comfortable bringing drama and comedy, but he tends to play characters the same way. One of the few movies he stood out in was Payback.

Speaking of Maverick, it's on CMT right now. 4 pm, pst. I'm gonna go watch it.

What about Hamlet or Braveheart?

reply

I haven't seen those movies but have heard he's good in those movies.

I just heard the line, "she's so ugly, when she's making love, she has to pretend she's someone else." ROFL.

I would highly recommend both, espescially "Braveheart"
