How does Maverick come out ahead

When Maverick has to pay the hoodlums that let him beat them up, how does he come out ahead. I have seen the movie a dozen times, and I can't figure it out.

reply

I don't understand your question.

reply

Well, I only saw this movie for the first time last night on TV. But I don't think it ever really said he did come out ahead, unless it was edited out. But, the four guys who were going to get the $100 were really excited and were giving him all their money so they could have it. They probably just gave him more than what he needed for change, or more than $100. But he probably wasn't going to argue, and get out of there before they discovered the error of their ways.

reply

No, he owed each guy $5. But he only had a $100 bill, so he needed change. They each gave him $25 each. In the end Maverick lost no money, but the hoodlums were excited to have a huge bill.

reply

I do seem to remember that he came ahead somehow, but I watched the movie yesterday and i didn't see anything... I probably remember a scene from another movie...

ok, you are all idiots. It never says ANYTHING about how much each person gave him, they just all gave him their cash. It is only implied that he came out ahead, but never made a fact. The closest they come to saying anything about it, is when one guy claims "i have $19". watch the movie again

reply

patrickoconnor16 - although you are right about no actual amount being mentioned of what they actually gave him, I dont see the point of calling people idiots in this board, especially since you were also wrong; the guy said he had $17 not $19. Well, anyway, the future of the world lies not in the winnings or losings in this scene (albeit maybe in yours?)

reply

Yeah, you dumb ****. You insult others posters while you yourself are devoid of the fact's. Shame on you.

reply

I thought that the funny thing about this was not that Maverick comes out ahead, which I thought was never mentioned, but that the guys say that 'It's 25 apiece' and never stop to think that they all gave him different sums of money and therefore some of them are losing money and some gaining.

reply

No, Maverick shouldnt have come out ahead. Everybody knew he owed them 5 bucks a head and I'm sure they could have added that total up. They wouldnt have allowed him to leave with more. They were dumb enough that I'm sure Maverick was smilling at the fact the could split up the money he gave them and it would cause a lot of trouble for their simple minds.

This is a pill for the world to give worms to ex-girlfriends.

You just don't get.... huff.... woo hooooooo!

reply

I realize this is extremely late in replying, but your response is the closest to the actual answer. The humor behind the scene is not that Maverick is coming out ahead, but that the other men think they are. They were only suppose to get $5/piece and Maverick tells them to give him $75-80 change. When he gives them $100, they think they're getting $25/piece, but they are still only getting about their original amount because they gave him change. It's as simple as that.

The one guy who gave him $17, was suppose to get $5, he thinks he's getting $25, but he's only getting about $8.

reply

It seemed to me that they were also impressed by the fact they were getting a hundred dollar bill. No doubt a rarity for most back then.

He's taking the knife out of the Cheese!
Do you think he wants some cheese?

reply

I thought the hundred dollar bill was fake. Alfred molinas character scoffs at the idea of them getting a hundred dollar bill.

Start your day off the holy way with christ chex!

reply

I think the joke is that the $100 bill was not in circulation at the time the movie was set. Therefore, Mav gave them a worthless bill, and actually earned money because they gave him "change."

It would be like me giving you a $3 bill and getting three $1 bills as change.

reply

That can't be it, in the stacks of money given at the Poker scene you can clearly see a hundred dollar bill. It's just as people have said, Maverick gets more/almost as much money as he should've, but the hoodlums think they've hit the jackpot.

reply

Just the fact that they outnumber him 4-1 and have already proven they can beat him up, but make change instead of just taking his money, is actually pretty funny...

reply

Yep, that's already very funny.

They're awfully honest lol
