Why the hell was Schoup still in the game?

In the last game against the White Sox, with the Indians winning 6-5 in the ninth, Schoup is still pitching. In real life, not only would the closer have been brought in for such a situation, but also Schoup probably would've been taken out after Parkman's home run. I'm a baseball geek, and such bad strategy prevents me from fully enjoying this movie.

Actually, there's a similiar situation earlier in the movie. Vaughn is pitching against the Mariners, it's the 9th, and the Indians are winning 10-7 but the Mariners have the bases loaded. We are led to believe that Vaughn started the game, as it's before his move to the bullpen. The problem is, he's given up seven runs AND is still pitching AND the bases are loaded. Is the Indians' bullpen in this movie really that bad?

reply

That was AFTER he moved to the bullpen. The bleacher bums say that being demoted would be a wake-up call for him. So he was supposed to be the closer that day.

Snoopy is one cool cat...although he's a dog.

Didn't Vaughn start game 4 against the Sox and play the entire game before giving up a game winning HR to Parkman? Or was that an experiment to bring him back from the bullpen.

When Vaughn does come out of the bullpen in game 7, Quaids character impleis that Vaughn is the only pitcher left in the pen. "youre old mother hubbard and only Vaughns in the cupboard"

Not sure if it helps but in game 7 the pitcher Vaughn replaces was a left-hander. Was the starting pitcher that game a lefty?

I couldn't agree more. One of the negatives about the movie are the clichés and the fake things that would never happen in a real baseball game.

I rewatched it and re answered my own question; Jake as well as the owner talk about Vaughan starting game 4.

But there had to have been relievers go in game 7 as it's stated Vaughn is the only pitcher they had left in the pen.
