failed effort

I watched this film with confidence that I would be very entertained by an adroit comedy. I was startled to find that, not only was it uncomedic, but its tone left me uncomfortable. Although I didn't want to tune out, I longed for its end! What was the purpose of this story?

I have to agree. The film was indisputably well acted, and the set and costumes were amazing, but the actual content was shaky at best, and as some people have commented, the scripting was badly paced.

I thought the script was fab, and what do you have a problem with content wise? It's based on fact and quite well researched so are you complaining that George III lived his life the wrong way and that made the film dull?

I think the cover sets us up to think it's a comedy and there are certainly a few comedic scenes, but the film is in fact a drama over all.
I had the fortune to work in a video store when one of my customers rented this movie and told me how disappointing it was for him. Apparently it was so disappointing that the customer never brought the movie back. Years later, I caught the movie on HBO or Showtime and sat through it desperately cheering on the king so that the son would not win the throne. Despite its historical inaccuracy, I enjoyed the film.... but then, I also enjoy watching the History Channel....
I think your mindset determines whether or not you will enjoy the film. If you go in with certain expectations, the film will most certainly disappoint you.

I saw this film when it was released to theaters in the States and I never had the impression that it was a comedy, so I'm not sure where that idea came from.

Still, it's always interesting to view a not-hot Rupert Everett. There's so much of a fuss made of his good looks (and rightly so), that it's interesting to be able to watch his acting and not be distracted by his appearance.

'Never' LOL It's funny. It's just not your cup of tea. I was distracted by Everett's appearance in this movie. Sometimes he looked like a witch or a theater actor.
