Not really, works well as a standalone.

Nope. You'll understand the storyline well enough in itself.

Knowing the series will only help in making sense of the small/finer details. ie: Like you'll understand what a "Zentraedi" is and why Guld looks different than everyone else.

That's pretty much only it which really won't take away anything from the movie.
