why i hate the 2 leading guys *spoilers*

ok, the fight scenes are great, music is ok, animation top notch...

but i cant get over their conversations during the last fight in the plane...

i mean, Guld rapes the girl when they were young...ok, he was alien-ish, couldnt control his anger, general *beep* got all that. later on he starts to be quite an ok guy.

now isamu was her bf, or at least rather close...he doesnt defend her, doesnt even seem to try to. Nor does he confront Guld later...

and on top of that, during the fight, Guld remembers everthing, and he is rather shocked, as well as he should be. What bugs me the most is that Isamu procedes to forgive him, and they both have a laugh!!
It wasnt Isamu who could forgive him, it was the girl! How could they possibly start having a laugh about the good old days and how silly they were, when one of them raped the girl and the other one didnt protect her? Isamu might understand Guld, but he cannot forgive him, because he was not the one hurt!

I am rather shocked at the attitude of the movie towards the women, especially the main girl...I mean the other anime i have seen done by Watanabe, Cowboy Bebop, has some of the most powerful and interesting female characters I have ever seen, in any medium, but here the main heroine is very flat, and people treat her like crap, and she does nothing about it. She actually goes on loving the two jerks!

I tried to like the movie, but the three main characters are really weird, and i cant stop hating both lead guys...

The entire point of that sequence was that Isamu and Myung had already forgiven him long before; they led Guld to believe that everything was Isamu's fault, so he wouldn't be wracked with guilt over something he did during a psychotic break. Isamu's reaction was less "YAY INSTANT FORGIVENESS" and more "So you finally realized it, huh?".

And are you kidding me? Myung was a very good heroine, in my opinion.

It just wouldn't be a Macross title without a love triangle. Trust me, every single Macross you can think of had one.

i never saw that he raped her...
it seemed to me that he just pushed her down and ripped her shirt in the process...which if you were paying attention it was because he had anger issues and his emotions were uncontrollable

There was no rape. His psycotic episode overcame him momentarily but he regained himself before he could follow through.

Did you not see Guld's look of horror after he regained himself and realized he just ripped of Myung's blouse?

Also, as for the triangle theme, you sort of have to be a fan of the Macross series dating back to the 80's. It's sort of a re-occuring theme that it's actually become to be one of the staple's of the franchise.

To be honest, it's what I like over the other robot animes like Gundam. It's really less about the robots and more about the people within. Whereas Gundam seems like it's their robots that are the show's selling feature and they pimp it hard.

I don't hate Guld. I find him more likable. Isamu is cool but he is very smug and is very childish. He may have the good looks and the charm but he is very flawed as an adult. Guld is flawed yes but apart from his episodes(for which are not his fault) he is a genuine, kind hearted man.
