Movie or OVA?

Which version is better? I've only seen the movie and I wonder if I would miss anything if I don't see the OVA.

Yeah the movie was really good because it has a badass ending with guld and the drone fighter. However watching the OAV's will provide you with a great deal of insight to the total and complete storyline. The first episode shows the events leading up to isamu's arrival on eden as well as more interesting fight/ action sequences. Both (movie and OAV) are both unique in several different ways, and could be watched seperate from eachother. But I highly recommending on getting both, that way one could have a higher understanding of the complex world of the macross plus story.

The OVA has an extra fight scene in it that is great (In the OVA, Isamu walks away from the plane crash uninjured, but it later almost killed when a Bowman turns a combat simulation into a real fight by bringing a loader gunpod along for the ride). For me, this scene is worth getting the OVA for on its own.

You also get a lot of backstory and a full English dub (if your into that kind of thing). TheOVA has a less gory ending and the nudity is removed so that kids can watch it.

English Language Anime: Dub it, don't pervert it.

i liked the OVA more. they cut out a bunch of stuff here and there and a big ol' chunk out of episode 3.

The way you see Guld die in the movie is messed up. His stomach streches back to the seats level due to the intense speed.

all I can say is I have the OVA on VHS and the movie edition on DVD (from manga/sony) and it's TERRIBLE. burned in english subs with the worst video quality i've ever paid for (i paid close to $40 CAD for it when it first came out). the cut of the movie is ok. granted, there is some new stuff... i was missing a lot of the action from the OVA. i really don't recommend the movie edition unless you got that HD remastered box set. gah. it's been over 6 years and i'm still mad about this DVD!

The problem is that both the movie and the OVA have bits cut out that I really like. I'd love to see an amalgamation with the two, with NOTHING cut out.

As for which Guld death I would include, I'd probably go with the movie one.

I will go with movie

reply

Not that there's anything wrong with the movie, but go with the OVA if you can.

The remastered version was only released in Japan without any subs so the targetgroup is probably not that big ;)

I just watched the film, and I rather enjoyed it personally.
