Macross novice help

Recently got macross plus and know nothing about the series at all. Should I watch macross plus or should I pick up the first macross series, to get a better understanding of Macross. Any thoughts?

Hey OP, I'm a novice too, so please may you tell me what the other Macross series are called? You're probably more in-the-know than I am about this heh. :x

Let's see, there was the "Super dimension fortress macross", "Do you remember love", and "Macross 2" before "Macross plus."
