how are the two "worlds" connected? I've never watched much Robotech, but I've seen this movie/series dozens of times... just curious - because I've got a friend who loves Robotech (of which I'm fairly ignorant)

Robotech is an Americanized version of Macross. Macross Plus takes place in the Macross world but uses different characters.

Macross Plus takes place in the original Macross Universe. Robotech storyline is independent from Shoji Kawamori, Macross Creator version of Macross.
