Mind control?

Does anybody know why they removed all mention of mind control when they dubbed this film into English. Don't people get confused as to why all of the people either freeze up or nuts during the concert scene at the end.

Is there some stigma associated with mind control and subliminal messages in the US that made them take it out, or did they just think that it was boring or not credible enough to include?

Could you tell me where in the OVA they mentioned the mind control? Also, I just got done watching the OVA and don't remember people going nuts at the concert. Were you referring to the hacker/scientist who was in the plane with Isuamu?

reply

If you watch the OVA in Japanese (it's much clearer in the movie than in the OVA, both in the sub and the dub), they very clearely state that Sharon is a mind control system. She generates excietement by stimulating the human brain.

For an example in the sub people at the press conference a journalist clearely ask about Sharon being a mind control system and all those scenes with the picuture of a brain in them of them adjusting the mind control system, its much clearer in the Japanese version.

People going nuts:

Neuman (The scientist in the plane) when he tried to kill Dyson
Dyson when he zoned out while flying
The security gaurds who tried to kill Myung at the concert
The concert goers who zoned out
The military on the Macross who zoned out

All of these were because Sharon placed subliminal/hypnotic weirdness in her music to control people.

Ok, thanks for the response. Yeah, it would have been nice of the dub mentioned some of this, since it would have explained what was going on better.

What I want to know is WHY did they even bother to cut it. Does the US have something against mind control in anime?

Maybe the U.S. distributor thought the premise was rediculous? I don't know, does Manga Enterntainment usually "pervert" dubs?

Manga entertainment has a varied record, some things like Evangeleon are great, but for Rayearth (the 3 part ova, not magic night rayearth) they didn't even include the Japanese sound track on the DVD so you have no choice but to listen to the dub.

Largely my 'perverting' frustration is reserved for comapanies like Nelvana which which completly re wrote Cardcaptor Sakura by removing the first eight episodes of the series and 4Kids who turned Tokyo Mew Mew, into a show for 5 year old girls. Disney is currently the center of my perverting hatred right now for what they did to Kiki's delivery Service and Laputa.

US companies have a really bad habit of hacking around with Anime made for teenagers, inserting inain chatter into it and then selling it to a grade school audience. For example, I bet you didn't know that in the original versions of sailor moon and card captors both shows had gay couples in them. They were considered 'inapropriate' for a US audience so they took them out, even though it was an important part of the character development of each series and the couples were key characters.

A huge slice of the anime aimed at pre teens year in America was originally aired for an older audience in Japan, but it is dumbed down and marked at little children in America.

I think that Manga entertainment were just the distributor for Macross Plus, as far as I'm aware they didn't dub it themselves.

Sorry for bumping this ancient thread but when I read this question I just had to weigh in...

When I first saw the original version of Patlabor I (distributed by Manga Entertainment) on TV, there's a line in the English dub where Cmdr. Gotoh says that if he and his crew don't act and save the day, "certain sound waves would be transmitted through the earth's crust, causing robots all over the world to go berserk". I'm paraphrasing but that was the general gist of it. It sounded incredibly far-fetched to me.

In contrast the rerelease distributed by Honneamise/Bandai Visual completely cuts out this line entirely - in the subbed version it's also not mentioned.

Given this, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Manga Entertainment changed bits of the dub for the Macross Plus OAV (like cutting out the line about mind control).

I was wondering about this. This was one of those things I was meaning in the "Whats the story behind the two versions?" Board. The original 'nasty' cut I watched here in the UK was devoid of the mind control issues and didn't make sense at all. Strangest thing was a the time me and my friends were used to the terrible edited versions of anime and them not making sense so we just rolled with it.
When I saw the Movie, it made a little more sense, especially since they do mention the mind control at the press conference,(So i had to guess as to why all of the things that were happening was indeed mind control) but not until I watched the OVA did I actually and finally know what was going on and loved the show for just how good it is.

Shoji Kawamori did say he had difficulties including all of his ideas, may be this was one his didn't think important enough to be included. Thinking people might just get it....it is weird!

UK Cut?

I thought that that UK version was an uncut dub, what was edited out of it, is it any different form the Japanese OVA?

Strange to relate, but the Movie is actually the edited version, not the OVA. In this case they cut down the OVA and added the topless scene, Guld's on camera death, and the music video at the end to make the movie, rather than cutting them out to make the OVA as you'd otherwise recon in most cases.

IF you watch the Japanese version of the OVA, it brings in mind control in several places, they justignore this in the dub though.

I know I am a decade late to this thread but I thought it was just implied that Sharon was taking over everyone. How she did it was as explained but I thought she was using the monitors. We don't have anything against mind control but we also don't need everything spelled out for us.
