A Love Story?

I posted this topic titled: Have You Seen My Favorite Film in another forum, and some of the participants were a little skeptical. They seemed confused by interpretation of the film as being a love story. This is an excerpt from my original post.

This has been my favorite film for many years. During this time the film has received a lot of controversy, due to the relationship between the two main characters. Many viewers see a dark theme within the film while myself and others do not, but I will admit that this is the most unusual love story that I've ever seen. This story has been told many times and many different ways and often with similar closure. Throughout the film the story is camouflaged with action and suspense, but at its core the love interest is definitely there for all to see.

This particular story is about two people that are so different in every way, yet both living in fear and both prisoners of loneliness. One made a choice and allowed revenge to shape their life while the other was born the prisoner into the world which they live. As their story unfolds, finding redemption becomes paramount for both and in the search a love between them begins to grow as does the controversy associated with this film. What kind of love has always been the question and the answer is not an easy one, so it remains the most debated topic when discussing this film.<<<

>>> As we know most love stories are generally between two people that love each other. Leon and Mathilda were brought together by loneliness and through their experiences together a love grows between them so much so that one gives their life for the other. Their love for each other enabled them to escape their worlds of loneliness that had imprisoned them both.

Though not typical, sounds like a love story to me!

reply

There is platonic love there, surely.

reply

I wouldn't describe their love as Romantic, but I don't think I would describe it as Platonic either. Since their love was born out of loneliness, I believe the love they feel is much stronger.

I think the reason some people are confused by my interpretation, is maybe they lose sight of the fact that the story is not about Leon the hitman, but instead his love for Mathilda.

reply

I found their relationship and behavior to be platonic and innocent enough (despite all the shootings lol)
BUT i do get that some people could see something a bit 'off' in it...
Supposedly the first draft of the script had a 'love' scene between Leon and the girl...creepy beyond words if true...glad they dropped that element of the story
I otherwise really liked this one

From articles that I have read over the years, originally the script was written for an older girl to play the part, where Leon became her lover. While searching for the actress Besson discovered the much younger Natalie Portman and was very impressed with her. He rewrote the script that would allow her to play Mathilda where Leon became her protector instead.

Besson’s choice casting young Natalie changed the outcome of story all together. Before Besson revised the script the story had a hint of the Bonnie and Clyde scenario where they both celebrated their killings. Eventually they became lovers and they both died at the end. Again this comes from articles that I have read over the years. Never really found anything where Besson himself reveals much about the film. He was asked once in an interview, what’s the story of Leon really about? His reply was, the story is about a boy and a girl and they love each other. I do believe that revising the script for the younger girl made the story more compelling.

No I have not seen Anne of Green Gables. Is this a film or mini series and would you recommend it?

Looks interesting! I was a fan of Little House growing up. Michael Landon and Victor French could really deliver the emotional weight in a scene, really miss those guys. I would say Drama is my Genre, but really anything that deals with emotional situations.

I will give it a try. Do you have any other recommendations

I agree very good film I’ve seen it many times, but it’s been a few years. If you’re a fan of Charles Bronson he has another film that came out around the same time Mr Majestic, if you haven’t seen it. Not quite the same story, but I thought it was a good film.

Portman was too young. The movie gave me the creeps.

reply

A lot of people feel the same as you. This film definitely has a very diverse audience, but the diversity is what makes the film great at least for me. I believe there are as many people that hate the film as those who love it maybe more if I think about it. No matter how one feels about the film, I think most would agree that Leon is great for discussion. Quite often the discussions lead to heated arguments and I’m not sure that anyone ever proves anything with certainty.

reply

Though your back story gives a wonderful background I have heard those heated debates and shamers of Luc and I gotta say I agree. I think he is a pedofile at his heart and this film has its under tones of it sadly. If it werent for him I never wouldve thought of it but reading the shamers they make a lot of sense are a right just like the ones from creeper. They have a right to be upset and many of these loyal movie buffs investigate well and do their hard work research and are dead on. I didnt want to believe them but they are so accurate you end up falling to their end and in this I give this a shamefully pedo movie.

reply

So you wouldn’t consider the film to be shameful if someone else had written and directed the movie?

reply

That's right.

I never thought about that till others brought it to light.
Just like Jeepers, or powder.

reply

Ok! At least you liked the back story, I think. So in your opinion what kind of Love did they share?

reply

I did. Do.

It's hard to divide the two seeing it is one in the same as the writer is also the director, and the caster.

Perverse. Because though apparently innocent to the naked eye it is meant to imply to the sick that is lustful in a subtle way. They probably stopped short for striction reasons otherwise we would've had a full blown Sexual relation maybe because it was a film made for america had it been foreign who knows what would've been the limit.

reply

Well I guess we all see the story differently, but I don’t believe that the film is aimed at any specific type of person, neither is it meant to imply anything to anyone. How one interprets the film depends a little on how hard they are willing to look beyond the subtle things.

Ooh believe me you probably dont want to know, or maybe you do. It's too bad many left the imdb sequence because those from back in the day sure hammered him.

For starters he married I think the Milla from the 5th when she was under age and he was much older. He looks like a creep most of the time and mostly dated or dates young women usually underage. Somehow he gets away with that. A lof of his story revolves around older men with younger women. Once they reach a certain age he normally gets rid of them. He exploits his fame, casting, directing, and writing capabilities to full extend. Many of the people he casts are like minded. Take for instance these nice group of folks. Jean just read had been married three times and the last one is a woman half his age. Him being around 70. Same story goes for Oldman. Natalie did no better as she never married anyone her equal and one has to wonder what is she still doing in such a corrupt industry when she started out young surrounded by creeps and at a a time where many young stars later complain about sexual harrassments and the industry creepingly pushing them. Almost all ending up being fucked up. What is so secret about this little girl? Maybe she is so fucked up she hides it well. I always thought it was strange being so popular and so sought after being knocked up by a back up dancer from bad low budget film to which someone decided to give her the award.
