So what were the creatures? *SPOILERS!*

Judging from what I've seen from this movie and what I've read of H.P. Lovecraft's original story, the creatures in this film seem to be humans from the Martense family that are products of incest, feeding off of corpses, and living underground for a long, long time. That kind of background, along with their looks and how strong and tough they are, leads me to believe that they are ghouls or a prototype for ghouls. What do you think they are?

You answered your own question, I agree they are ghouls.

You are correct sir.

In the original HPL story, the protagonist is not a relative to the Martense family but a investigator of the strange and the odd . HPL's idea was that people, once isolated from society will devolve into demonic, savage half-men.

Prototype for Ghouls? Maybe. HPL's Ghouls are savage half-men... or rather, could have be men in their past, as what happens to Pickman (of Pickman's model) in Dreamquest of unknown Kadath. I think HPL's fear of human de-evolving was, overall, he's big 'revulsion' medium in his earlier works (Rats in the Walls, Picture in the house, and Lurking Fear). Humans devolving into Ghouls definitely is part of that fear.

Sorry for busting out the HPL references, you just got me thinking ;)
