A bit confused about Vergil's back story

In Watty's voice-over narration which introduced the character Vergil (Starlene's father), he said that Vergil had ripped his own throat open during a heavy acid trip in the early sixties. But then he adds that "Vergil lost the function in his legs due to an amphetamine addiction he acquired while tryin' to lose weight so he could avoid the draft. He threw a clot and lost the use of his legs."

My question is, why would Vergil have needed another physical malady by which to avoid the draft? If he had ripped his throat open, thus requiring an electronic device so as to enable him to speak, I'm sure the military would not have had much interest in using him as a soldier. So why would he have found it necessary to make the extra effort of making himself "unfit" to avoid the draft?? Wasn't he already unfit?

"Nice beaver!"
"Thank you, I just had it stuffed."

eric... i can understand your confusion in regard to vergil's backstory. but trip on this... vergil had started the heavy speed use a year before he anticipated being drafted to maximize his weight loss potential. it was during the later part of this speed diet that he took some acid and freaked out and ripped his throat out. so his legs were already being damaged BEFORE the lsd trip. i think the confusion comes up in the reference to his taking the acid in the "early sixties". which makes the sequential relationship between the acid trip and the onset of the draft a little shakey. i should have wrote that he ripped his throat out in the LATE 60'S! *beep* Oh well there's nothing i can do about it now. But you're right it BUMPS a little bit. THANKS ERIC! i am now going to obsess on this for the rest of my life. and i CAN'T EVER fix it... alas... :)
