Try the 1970s British miniseries. They have that Castles in the Air chapter, with the picnic. They also do a better job with fleshing out the post-marital scenes between Meg and John.

My very favorite episode in the Novel is when John proposes and Meg is kind of wishy-washy about it. Then Aunt March comes in and starts attacking and insulting him. In the midst of defending him Meg realizes how much she loves him and John overhears and comes in and embraces her. sigh. I don't think I have ever seen a movie version that does this scene justice. It is just priceless.

Especially when Aunt March gets John's name wrong and calls him Mr. Rook and Mr. Book.

Yes, that part is laugh out loud funny.

I've never understood why the lovely picnic scene was always left out! A very good thread, btw. I'm looking forward to checking out the British miniseries version.

I loved the BBC 1970 version when it came out. It's getting on for four hours long (in instalments) and fits in most of the story including Good Wives. The American accents are dreadful, and the wigs dire - but you can't have everything! Unfortunately, it's only available on VHS.

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain.

I agree with you. I liked it because that is where the reader sees something between Meg and Brooke. In the movie, there was some flirtation and then they got together around the time that Mr. March came back but it would have been nice to see some more insight in their relationship and Brooke's feelings are really apparent during the picnic. Also, Beth starts to come out of her shell a little with the boy who hurt his leg (I forgot his name, sorry). Usually, Beth is seen as this one-dimensional character but in the book Beth was shy but also sweet with everyone.

Amy's my favorite character, so I miss her 2 (?) chapters abroad....and that she eventually matures enough while over there to turn down Freddy Vaughn though he's extremely rich.
