Little detail I noticed

When Bruce and Laurie first met, she was wearing makeup. When she cut school to be with him, she was wearing makeup then too. So why did he have a fit over her wearing it on her birthday?

part of being in a controlling relationship. it was all fine and good while he was trying to win her, but once he had her he felt he "owned" her. wearing makeup probably made her look too old and he wanted to keep her young (telling her she was fat, not wanting her to get pregnant).

I also found it curious that she was wearing it when she was at the roller rink, telling Marlene about her [second] pregnancy.

I think that a lot of females, even those not abused, make that mistake. They think that if the guy is very possessive, it means love and they don't want to lose them.

Not allowing a woman to wear make up or dress a certain way is a very common way men control women.

When I was a teen I had a crush on an older guy and for over a month he seemed to like me back. He started to tell me who I could talk to and even on the bus a few times he made me wipe off chapstick and another time lip gloss. I thought he liked me because he told me "You don't need that. Take it off!" Thankfully a friend quickly told me he shouldn't be saying that to me and that they were warning signs.

Like Laurie I was abuse as a child and the idea of an older guy taking notice of me. When he told me not to talk to certain people I thought I thought it meant he cared about me. Telling me to take off make up to me seemed like he thought I was pretty and didn't need it.

But, its only the beginning of serious control.

I know someone whose in a controlling relationship, when the guy met her she wore little to no makeup, once he won her over he told her what a train wreck she looked like without makeup on & didn't want to be seen with her.

She's totally brainwashed & calls him a godsend , she never leaves the house without her hair & face done, he told her she had fat rolls, now she eats what he wants her to eat.

he doesn't like her friends, so she cuts them out of her life to make him happy. (Myself included)

It's very scary to see what a person will "believe" is love & affection when it's truly control and possessiveness.
