One Stab tells us that Tristan was buried in an unmarked grave, and I infer that he meant somewhere in the forest. What I don't understand is - why?
They have a family plot. They obviously found the body. Tristan was the favorite. That was stated. You guys seem to find a lot more undercurrent here than I do. Can you please explain this?
My take; is that he always seem at peace when he was out in the wilderness.... So he had his final battle with the/a bear and they buried him out there to be left alone.
I'm sure his immediate family knows where he's buried and can visit him, if they so choose to.
I don't remember if they mentioned burial, did they? Maybe he just went hunting and was never seen again, within the woods. Or as the other poster had stated, that he was more at home there than on the ranch.
Burial is mentioned - One Stab says 'he was buried in an unmarked grave". The rest of your post may have something to it, but it still seems incomplete to me.

He could have been never seen again and expected to have died there.
I haven't read the book, but I watched the movie again just now and One Stab never mentions a burial. He simply says "His grave is unmarked, but it does not matter." Also, if you look at the gravesite at the end, and listen to the narrative, Tristan outlived everyone except his own kids. He watched them grow up and then raise their own families. By the time he died in 1963, Tristan was pretty much a hermit living alone in the borderland. People would occasionally spot him hunting somewhere. My guess is, his body lay where he fell when the bear killed him. It was a good death.
