Alfred was a jerk

He declared his feelings for Susannah over Samuel's grave. He told Tristan he would fail at making Susannah happy. He constantly made Tristan guilty about Samuel which probably triggered his PTSD even further. He also got involved in some shady business/politics which lead to Isabelle 2 being killed. I did't pity him at all in the Tristan-Susannah-Alfred love triangle.

He declared his feelings for Susannah over Samuel's grave.
He did that out of respect for Samuel and he told her that.

He told Tristan he would fail at making Susannah happy.
Well, he was apparently right about that!

He constantly made Tristan guilty about Samuel which probably triggered his PTSD even further.
Yes, he said some things that he probably shouldn't have said, but I wouldn't say that he did it constantly.

He also got involved in some shady business/politics which lead to Isabelle 2 being killed.
No, actually it was Tristan who was involved in some shady business which led to Isabelle's death.

I did't pity him at all in the Tristan-Susannah-Alfred love triangle.
I did, but I pitied them all. It was a sad story.

Well said! Agreed

And yet he was by far the best character. His role in the ending gunfight and the final acceptance from his father was among the most emotionally riveting scenes I can remember in film.
