Where was it filmed?
I know it was set in Virginia, but was it shot there, too? I love this movie, and the area where it was shot was so very beautiful. Does anyone know specifically where it was shot?

It was filmed in Tazewell County, VA, mostly in and around the area known as the Cove. The scenes at the store (owned by the grandfather?) is the Wardell store. There is at least one other scene that takes place just outside of Tazewell.
shareMy Father's family lives there and my great uncle was on the firefighters squad...I guess it was a union thing w/ the film-makers not the county. The beautiful land still exists and it is in western Virginia not West Va.
The land as of 8 mos. of this post is still pristeen as it was when it was filmed. It is in Tazewell county and ask the locals and they will point it out. Great People, good wholesome film. Beautiful land, surprised not recognized for cinemetogrophy by the industry...(It was pointed out by Siskel and Ebert). Yes it looks as well as it was filmed but that guy did something special rarely said till now...Outstanding work!
Bc...P.S. The Firefighters were all volunteers. I imagine the producers gave a small check for the station to stay running but no one I know got a cent or would take one. Tazewell F.D. Rules.
That's interesting. I didn't know Virginia had sheep ranchers that dress and act like western cowboys, do up their ranch in southwestern cowboy motif, and most of all, where did the wolf come from? Would have made more sense if this were Idaho or Colorado or even Wyoming!
shareBeen so long since I posted above but I know cyotes are common, and dont forget, this is considered the deep south in terms of culture/apparel and so forth...yes those who are native to the area did dress that way yes it was in '94 and not many changes presently. This was NOT a western but a south east film; big differences from a Southern and Western film.

It has been years but the wolf would have to be a cyote. I don't live there but visit every few years (relatives) if you kill a cyote you could/can take it to the local Fish&Game and get 75 dollars (2009)

Yes the movie was filmed in Tazewell County, VA. Most of the cast and crew stayed at the Fincastle Motor Inn in Tazewell at the time. Except Lassie, of course, and he had his own personal motor home. Who would of thought one of the highlights of my life was meeting a dog?! The most beautiful dog I have ever seen though. Always thought Lassie was girl til I saw him hike his leg and pee on a bush!! I have several of the call sheets from the movie. It was very exciting!!
