Parallelism of Naples and Albania

Lamerica is a sad, depressing movie about immigration and the circumstances that lead to it. The portrayal of the Albanian disposition is shown with a very tragic eye, yet the absurdities of the situation never fail to surface, adding a touch of ironic comedy to something so despairing.

I love the unexpected parallelism established later in the film between Naples and Durres-----two cities that gave way to mass exoduses albeit at different times of the 20th century.

Another film dealing with the absurdities of the Communist regime in Albania, 'Slogans' is a must for anyone trying to understand the systematic psychological traumas inflicted by the 'Party'.

***SPOILER ALERT***

Lamerica is also a movie about redemption. As he sails his way back to Italy at the film's end it is clear that GIno will be a changed man.

Its a wonderful film that I would love to experience again. I watched it once, late night, on the tube, about 7-8 years ago, and have been trying to obtain it ever since. I've told many people about it so word to mouth advertising is what I gave to this film.

"You have been assimilated, resistance was futile!"
