Looks Familiar

At the beginning of Kickboxer 4 when Davids telling the story in a letter
to his wife, after it shows when Kurt beat Tong Po and Tong Po was
dishonored it shows a person spitting on Tong Po. When he was spit on it
looked like the old Tong Po from the Kickboxer 1. Perhaps that was cut
footage from part 1 or 2. Or maybe the original Tong Po filmed that one
scene or something and was replaced for the rest of the movie. This may be
an error by me but it looked like the old Tong Po in that scene.

Well spotted - the short scene you refer to was infact from an early sequence cut from Kickboxer 2 at a late stage. That sequence displayed Tong Po's torturous training after his defeat by Kurt (Van Damme).

Van Damme's friend Micheal Quissi played Tong Po in the first film and again in the first sequel (against Van Dammes wishes), but the character was later played by Kamel Krifra in Kickboxer 4.

Why didn't Van Damme want Quissi to do the sequel?

reply

probably cos he knew it'd be poor

Where did you get this information or does anybody else know this.

Because my version did not show Tong Po training at all.

He appeared when he gunned down Kurt (but not Eric even though Xian said Eric and his niece Mylee died in the same shootout) and when he kills Brain and fights David Sloan.

There was an article in Impact magazine many years ago. They used to extensively cover B movies and had an article on the Kickboxer series. In an interview Quissi said (or said something along the lines of) the training footage was beautifully shot but cut because it was so much more impressive than the final fight.

Van Damme and Qissi (and also Qissi's brother) were very close friends they went to America together to start careers in the film industry. After the success of Kickboxer Van Damme was planning to make it his " FRANCHISE" but he asked for too much money so the producers went ahead and rewrote Kickboxer 2 with someone else,Van Damme was hoping if Qissi didn't return to the role that it would give him (JCVD)more bargaining power and that they would delay the sequel until his demands were met.Qissi took the paycheck as he knew that his future roles would be either a)fairly limited or b)very scarce. He didnt return for this crockfest (IV) because he too demanded more monet than the producers were willing to pay.Hope thats helpful for you

reply

yeah Van Damme didn't do it because they didn't offer him enough money, instead he decided to do another flick that had a larger budget that film ended up being Double Impact...so I say he made the right decision.
