question about dubbing

I've seen so many movies(Fist of Legend is one) where you are watching an already dubbed version, but it's not dubbed into English. If I have to watch a dubbed version anyway, it might as well be in English. I don't mind subtitles if I get to hear the actual actors performances.

Why is it done this way?

This movie is a Hong Kong production so they naturally speak Cantonese (the dialect mostly used in Hong Kong). However, for international release it is dubbed into Mandarin Chinese (the most understood dialect for worldwide Chinese). Most DVDs have language selector so you can choose which one you want to hear.
