I was in Iron Will

Hi,

I was an extra in Iron Will. I ended up making good friends with some of the actors with speaking roles and I was invited to the dailies. I had a great time, the people were all very down to earth and fun; I was in the scene where Will stops outside the church; I was the kid standing next to him, wearing virtually the same outfit. MacKenzie was very nice, but at the time I was terrified of him (because I had a fear of famous people). He kept making jokes about the latex lips they had him wearing (which he didn't take off, nor the other makeup, by the time of the dailies in the evening). I also met Sean Astin at the dailies, but was not terrified of him because I didn't know who he was. :) Anyway, I've seen some of the comments on this board, and I thought I'd tell you what I know about the filming of Iron Will.

First of all, it didn't start out as a Disney film. They were shooting different versions of it, one with sex and swearing, one with none. I know because I saw the different shoots at the dailies. They were hoping Disney would pick it up but they weren't sure, so they were doing one with a more adult theme. Secondly, they weren't sure who they were going to have win- if it would be Will, if the Native Americans would win, or if Will would win but then give the money to the Native Americans, etc. This was discussed quite frequently because they didn't want the film to be trite or cliche. Seeing that Disney picked it up, I suppose it makes sense that it ends the way it does, and virtually excludes Will's girlfriend from the story (which is too bad, because she was a drama major at the local university where I used to live in Minnesota, and everyone thought it would be her big break). My father, who was far more involved in the film than I was, nevertheless ended up on the cutting room floor. :) So that's what I know about Iron Will, plus the fact that everyone in it was very nice. The worst people were a couple kids who were extras with us, talking like they knew everything- and yet they were the only ones reprimanded by the director! :D Anyway, that's what I know, I just thought I'd try to set the record straight.

You are mistaken on some of your info. I was the Location Manager on Iron Will and I can tell you that it was ALWAYS a Disney picture (it said so right on my paychecks). No adult themes were ever contemplated. If you saw cursing in dailies, you saw actors blowing their lines.

Although we did shoot two endings (one with Will winning and one with him getting beat), I don't recall any discussion of him giving away the prize money.
