Underated Film (spoilers)

I really enjoyed this film, it wasnt a gang movie or no abusive relationship film , it dealt with issues that could have been any family or culture, all the subplots were excellent Joe Morton and Suzanne Douglass marriage or her relationship with her mom

the sisters relationship and their husbands relationship, one a ex panther , the other a consevative, but they found a way to respect each other

Dwayne Martin loving his cousin and looked out for him but maintained his cool

Tate and Pinkett , Pinkett never really liked him just jealous of her ex boy friend and using him(tate)

The Morris Chestnut character was also great
(the fake bomb scene was great)

Tate and Johnsons love scene

I mean I can go on and on but again this film is so underated

Inkwell Fan Fiction (my sequel)

larenz tate is one my favorite actors and this is one favorite coming of age movies since i could kinda relate to Drew's teenage problems in my younger dats, i know many teens would relate if anyone would show them this underrated but execellent film. i enjoy it so much that i decided to write a little sequel too it. I'm a pretty skilled writer, so it WILL be good. if anyone got any ideas or inner plots they liked to throw at me go ahead, its set about a year later since his life changing summer now at the end of his jr year in high school about proceed into another interesting summer. he's no longer completely "friendless" and has a couple of folks he hangs around. I'd most likely make drew return to the inkwell (maybe a lauren kelly encounter)
anyway, big props to larenz and the movie

jr: so did you pop it?
Drew: naw we fried it.

I am glad to know that I am not the only one that thought the film was underrrated. I am glad the focus was not on crime, drug use,and violence in the movie either. We have seen this theme a lot. Show other films ALONGSIDE films dealing with these issues. It was refreshing because it was not overly sentimental in the sense of sugarcoating stuff and not overly gritty. It was a happy medium. I like Crooklyn/Lackawanna Blues for the same reasons.

It's a very good film, I almost listened to the first reviewer on here and passed on the movie. They said the story was hard to follow as things weren't explained????????

They also called it blackexploitation, I don't see that at all, I guess because it took place in the 70s.

If you have family members who have conflict(who doesn't) you can relate to it, and if you grew up in the 70s you can definitely relate.

I enjoyed it, nice blend of comedy and drama.

No surprise here. Just watched this movie again for the first time since I've been an adult this morning and loved every minute of it. Fairly well written and wonderfully acted and directed.

Black films are continuously underrated while relative pieces of garbage (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) are overrated. The fact that this movie isn't even a 6 on IMDB is crazy to me. Not saying its award winning cinema, but its definitely an above average coming of age film. The fact that its told from a Black but non-gangster POV makes it even more unique and imo worthy of acclaim or at least recognition.

But I dunno, that's just little ole Black me and my opinion.

"So thats it? After twenty years, so long good luck?"
"I don't recall saying good luck"

I enjoyed this film as well. It is a great film about family and real life issues. I loved how in this film Junior looks out for his cousin despite his friends initials objections.
