I felt bad for him,Susie was clearly nuts!!

reply

Me too, although I don't think things would've gotten so bad if she hadn't hooked up with Fritz. If Susie had just remained with her parents, I think the situation would have been a lot less intense. I think Susie still would've made life difficult for Tom, but things wouldn't have turned deadly.

I agree,Fritz was like a Rasputin type to Susie, and she fell for it. Of course, his parents weren't exactly the most sane people in the world.

reply

True. One of the things I liked most about this film was how it showed Susie's transformation outwardly as well as inwardly. In the beginning of the film she is the perfect southern belle with perfect curls and the perfect dress. (I really do love that dress Susie wore when she met Tom's parents.) As the film progressed, her outward appearance continued to match her downward spiral. At the end, in her final moments of life, she is totally unrecognizable from what she used to be. She went from a feminine, dainty, albeit shrill, difficult woman, to almost androgynous.

She lost herself entirely. When that clip is played at the end of Susie at the wedding, it was incredible to see how far she fell in such a short period of time. It's a shame she didn't get the help she needed for her mental and marital problems. I think if she and Tom had undergone mariral couseling, as well as individual counseling for herself and some proper medication, she couldn've been okay. I wonder what was really in those pills Fritz gave her.

I noticed as soon as she took them, she really went downhill. Towards the end, she really believed all the craziness Fritz was feeding her. She became so paranoid and out of touch that I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. She had so much going for her it's such a shame all that energy was channeled in the wrong direction.

I blame her parents,God rest their souls. They coddled her all of her life, and this is what they get. And as for Fritz's parents, wow!! They REALLY should have sent their son off to the loony bin!

reply

Agreed! I wonder what would've happened if Susie and Fritz had been around each other more as kids/young adults.

I KNOW what would've happened!! They would've caused that family to disown them sooner! Thay maybe also would've been like Bonnie and Clyde of the South.

reply

I feel so sorry for their families. There were some members of that clan who were quite accomplished, so it's a shame they were saddled with those hot messes.

Tom Lynch and his wife, Kathy Lynch, went on to have a child, whom they named Michael Thomas. Sadly, they divorced in November 1999 – a divorce that was followed with a heated child custody dispute that took years to resolve.

reply

I heard about that (I'm almost done with the book too) and I feel so sorry for Tom Lynch. Enduring the loss of John and Jim was bad enough, but having to go through another custody battle for his third son must have been even worse--like salt rubbed onto the wound. Shame on Kathy for putting him and Michael through that. After what Tom went through, she should've bent over backwards to make visitation as easy as possible. I was surprised to hear Tom was open to having more children after what he went through with Susie.

While the whole mess with Susie was clearly tragic, we don't really know what goes on behind closed doors. Tom didn't deserve to lose his sons in such a horrific way but can we really blame Kathy for fighting for custody of her only child? We don't know what Tom was really like.

Fair enough, but unless Tom's craziness riveled Susie and Fritz's, then I would've ensured that tom has as much access to Michael as possible if I were Kathy. It's just such a shame this man has had such bad luck. Maybe he would've been better off if he had stayed single--or at least attended a different college.

I do agree that Tom has had more than his share of grief for one lifetime. I can't imagine. I just don't put too much stock in these t.v. movies to portray the real life characters accurately. For example, "The Betty Broderick Story" made for t.v. movie is nothing like the real story AT ALL. And I wonder how much creative license was taken to tell the Lynch/Newsom story as portrayed on t.v. Yes, Susie and Fritz were both nuts and no one deserves to have their children blown up to resolve a custody battle, but I want to know why Tom took Susie to New Mexico when she clearly wanted to stay in NC. Shouldn't they have talked about relocating BEFORE they got married? And it seems like he was pretty hands off with the kids (that is if the t.v. movie is accurate). I'm not trying to say that Tom deserved what he got; maybe I'm not articulating well. But I just can't help but think there's more to this story (and it was a FOUR HOUR movie!) than what was told. As far as staying single or going to a different college, how was he to know that Susie was so "high strung" and that events would take the turn they did.

I've read the book and the movie is surprisingly accurate. I did learn some additional information though--apparently Susie was in a serious relationship with a businessman prior to shacking up with Fritz and Fritz was quite the ladies man. Maybe Tom was hands off because Susie was so high strung and he didn't want a fight. I'm not saying that's the right approach--he should've stood up to her sooner, but it's just an idea. I also think Tom shouldn've considered Susie's feelings before moving to NM. He had to know his prim southern belle wouldn't fair well in the southwest.

I never read this book. I may do it now that I am much older and it doesnt bother me but when watching the movie the boys and Susie are very much like what they were when I knew of them. Jim Lynch was my childhood best friend. And they were both great boys. John stood up and watched out for his brother Jim. And Jim was the best friend you could ever have as a kid. Very easy going loved "Star Wars" and the movie "Tron" which we were fascinated by at the time as kids. John wore a lot of army clothes as I called them back then to school. I also noticed that in the movie as well. Which is a minor detail but it looked as they someone paid attention.
