haircut scene

There is always a haircut scene. "in the Army now", "Stripes", etc. They never show one big part of it that those who served remember. The recruit soldier has to pay for that haircut. IIRC it was $3 at Ft, Dix in '89.

I thought the first one was always free...

drug dealers operate like that. not barbers.

I was in basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC winter 1989. I too thought the first haircut was free but I was charged $3.00. I actually thought I was overcharged because it took the barber about 30 seconds to shave my head and he refused to leave a little on top like I asked!

I'm sorry, I didn't see you there, or there.

reply

Mine was 5 i think, although could have been 3. And that was in the navy

So...
You get a uniform , accomodation , training , food , drink , a pair of boots , a gun .... but you have to pay for the haircut?

is it some some kind of psychological mind fuck thing ....?

reply

I was thinking the same.

Maybe it is a psychological mind fuck thing

Your taking the "no way back now" step and paying to do it , reinforcing that you want to do this!
