Best reasons to watch

The best reasons to watch this movie: Meg Ryan, Walter Matthau, Meg Ryan, the story, Meg Ryan, interesting twist on Einstein's possible personality, Meg Ryan and oh, did I mention Meg Ryan? I will watch anything that Meg Ryan is in!

Well, Meg Ryan is good enough a reason for me to watch it. And I'm planning to show it to my movie group Saturday.

I saw it years ago. I thought that it was just another tiresome movie which portrays math people as having no social skills, etc. Too bad, because it was a great idea for a movie, with a good cast and all.

None of these characters were portrayed as having no social skills, although I think social skills are phony anyway and would have applauded any of the characters for shunning them. Walter Matthau was great as Einstein, and I quite enjoyed the one buddy who liked Spike Jones.

I see my previous post wasn't clear. The movie is charming, but what got to me was the way that the characters kept saying that Meg Ryan, who plays the math person, needed to learn about life just because she is a math person. YAWN....you'd be surprised at how many people in the "real world" take this idiotic stereotype seriously. Perhaps I should outline some of the dumb remarks which I've heard in my lifetime....

By the way, I agree that social skills are phony. Ironically, "social skills" usually promote anti-social behavior (snobbery, cliques, etc.).

I've watched it twice now, planning to show it to my movie group on Saturday. Nobody in the movie in the movie said that Meg needed to learn about life. Albert Einstein, her uncle and guardian, doesn't feel qualified to teach the real world and wishes that his niece was having more fun, had more self-confidence and not involved with the stuffed shirt of a psychologist, but he sure as heck isn't looking down on her because she's a math person!!

One could easily argue against her eventual romance with Tim Allen, a garage mechanic, although he does very much respect her intellect. And it's nicely brought out that while he's no intellect, he's no dummy either. His I.Q. test shows how high he is in motor skills, actually spacial reasoning, which obviously helps him in his occupation. But whether marriage above his intellectual level is a good idea is questionable...but of course, this is a comedy and not to be taken seriously.

Tim Allen? Wasn't it Tim Robbins? Of course, it's been years since I've seen this movie....
