does anyone know the reason this movie was rewritten and hacked up from being a musical to just a sad boring story about loser actors? I read that it originally featured the little cute actress, and they cut out all of her musical numbers and rewrote the plot, and it is the reason the little actress left the business
shareCause it had poor test screenings, the audiences hated the little girl. But as you can see it was hard to cut down how freaking annoying she was.

shareYes, Nick Nolte is awful in this dreadful, forgettable film. What a bad decision to cast him in a romantic comedy! He plays a struggling actor who looks like he's pushing 50. After TV and film success, this was James Brooks' first mega-flop.

I think the child actress in this is GREAT! That crying scene at the end is really moving. (Plus, she has a beautiful face.)
I don't think the test screenings disliked her performance, specifically, I read they just didn't like the whole musical concept. And since none of the adult leads are known for singing (!), it's kind of hard to imagine their numbers being very well done.
