Music is beautiful

I want to buy the soundtrack. It doesn't seem to be in print anymore but it is called Electric Shadows, and has all of Zhao Jiping's music from some Gong Li films.

I find the instrumental theme haunting. What I really want though I can't seem to get for love or money- the recordings of FuGui singing along to his shadow puppets. The roaring quality of the singing in the iron smelting scene coupled with the tonalities of the Chinese musical scale makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. I love it.

reply

Well said, I love them all. Nostalgic.

The only place I ever found the soundtrack including when Fugui sings with the puppets is a French site called:

alapage.com

They will accept orders from the USA but I'm not sure about other countries. The album is called Epouses Et Concubines and is the soundtracks of the films of Zhang Yimou.

I hope this helps.

So are there several cd's with that name? the cd you're referring to is not the same as the "farewell my concubine"-cd you read about elsewhere? that seems to be a regular OST for just that movie. Anyway, the cd seems to be unavailable even on that french site nowadays. Annoying, to say the least.
And "Electric Shadows - Film Music by Zhao Jiping" features just a few songs each from different movies, but you CAN get a hold of it on amazon.com.

I am not sure if there are more CDs under other titles with this music. All I know is I got mine off of alapage.com and the title of the CD is "Epouses Et Concubines" (French title for the movie RAISE THE RED LANTERN). I have "electric shadows" as well, but the puppet song is not on there, and it's not really the original film music, but rather a beautiful classical-sounding reworking of the songs.

I would try eBay next. I bought my CD from alapage in mid-late 2006.

And the clanging of the Chinese cymbals. Beautiful music indeed.

Agreed, I adore the music in this film. Very beautiful and moving.

Does anybody know the name of the main theme repeated throughout the movie?

reply

On the album "Electric Shadows" by Jiping Zhao, the theme of "To Live" is reworked (not the original film music) under the titles: "To Live: Fugui & Jiazhen" and "To Live: Life's Years Like Flowing Water".

As far as the original name of the theme, I guess it's simply "To Live" "Houzhe" "Lifetimes" or "Vivre!" On the album "Epouses Et Concubines" there are several musical pieces (original score) from "Vivre!" (To Live title in France). This album is available at Amazon France:
