Yes, I am definitely with you on this one - I believe this is his greatest film. Although I'm not sure I would limit him to only one masterpiece - I would suggest Raise the Red Lantern perhaps also qualifies as such a work. But sure, To Live I think stands at the top of the heap - a sweeping, yet deeply human film, beautiful and incredibly moving.

Sorry but his greatest film has to be The Road Home. I wish he would return to this type of film.

After Raise the Red Lantern and Ju Dou.

I think it's just the nature of the stories.

The storylines of RTRL and JD are more compelling with their twists and turns.

The personal stories in the semi-epic movies like To Live and Farewell My Concubine will tend to get bog down in the big scenes and big turn of events expected in these movies.
