shes only mute. this movie was orginially a book called To Live by Yu Hua.

Yes, the fever only left Fengxia a mute, but her hearing also deteriorates, possibly as another effect of the disease. In one scene, when she is still a kid, her mother calls her name, Fengxia doesn't reply, her mother repeats herself, and finally has to clap her hands to get her attention.
