My stupid DVD is broken! Someone please fill in a gap

About halfway through the movie the picture went @£$%^&*((&^% for about 6 minutes. After it cleared up again, the son was suddenly dead and they were mourning at his grave.
Like, GREAT! Of all scenes in the movie this one had to be the broken one!

Would someone be so kind to describe what exactly happened in that scene? Thank you very much. :)

Some children came by the house to get the son to go to the 'school of smelting iron'. The son was sound asleep on the bed with the sister. The mother said to the father "don't wake him up because he had not sleep for a few days and was exhausted", but the father insisted that the boy wake up and go to the school because an official would be there and the father did not want to make a bad impression. The mother packed him a lunch in a tin box consisting of 20 egg dumplings.

The father carried the son to the school on his back (it was daylight outside) ... telling him that to work hard would bring a better life in the future, etc., he also told him the story that was also said at the end about the goose turns into a sheep, the sheep turns into an ox, etc... then something to the effect that after the ox is "Chairman Mao". (but at the end of the film he says the lines differenty to the grandson "after the ox the boy will grow up and things will be better").

Then it is nightime and the father is working with the puppets and a small child comes to tell him something... the people in the street start rushing to the other end of the square/road and there is a boy on a stretcher covered with a blood-soaken sheet. It is explained that the son had been killed when the official ran into a brick wall/fence and the bricks fell on the son that was sleeping on the other side of the wall.

The father runs into the street and cries in anguish and then the mother appears trying to get close to the son's body on the stretcher but the women of the village hold her back and won't let her see his body.

Then they are at the gravesite where your dvd started working again... the mother lays out the old tin of 20 dumplings plus 20 fresh ones that she just made.... etc.

I think that is most of it.

I hope that helps.

Yes, thank you, this was indeed of great help.
A friend of mine lives in Shanghai. I asked her to send me a proper DVD of the movie, seeing as the ones they sell here in germany all seem to be faulty at the same scene. Sloppy production. (And we Germans pride ourselves in quality work. HA!)

Also, the official turned out to be his war buddy - the one who wanted nothing more than to drive a jeep.

I was crying like a newborn baby when the little boy died and his mother brought the old dumplings along with freshly made dumplings to his grave site.

Such a beautiful and tragic film!

Yeah, that's a pretty bad scene to miss, as it influences the tone and plot of the rest of the movie. Hint: When that happens, if there you don't see a noticeable large scratch on the DVD trying washing the disk with warm water, rinsing in carefully and drying it with a soft, clean cotton cloth (tee shirts work great for this). It gets rid of the stuttering/stopping problem 9 time out of 10 for me (it's usually the result of fingerprints).
