Come on, you gotta love Tuffy...

I started watching Bollywood movies fairly recently, and my knowledge of Indian culture is certainly non-native, but I found this movie wildly entertaining. Cheesy, yes, but also gloriously romantic and truly funny in parts. Madhuri Dixit is absolutely gorgeous and a wonderful comedic actress. Salman is a perfect goofy younger brother in love. There were so many characters I liked. The girls' father who was a professor and a cook reminded me of my own Italian-American professor father. There are also a lot of beautiful songs.

The Bollywood movies I have seen make me want to learn Hindi because there are a lot of places where the subtitles don't tell you what they are saying! (censorship?) I also love a lot of the songs and I'm sure I sound idiotic trying to sing them - haha.

ok first of all ravi persad its a shame to say that u are indian and dont speak the language...have u ever come across any other person of any other nationality saying this...whats with u guys anyways " I'm Indian myself (I don't live in India so I don't speak the language) and have been looking at these films my whole life...yet I am not inspired to learn Hindi!" it sounds as if u are doing a huge favour to bollywood cinema by watching the films and as if bollywood is begging u to watch these films, if u dont watch it hundreds sorry millions of others will watch it....i have forever seen indians like you putting down their fellow indians and i guess thats the main reason people find it hard to succeed in india and thats why they have to settle in other countries. so even though u dont stay in india and dont speak the language pls respect someone elses interest in hindi instead of questioning their interest.and btw india doesnt miss people like u without people like u India could be a much better country..so thats why the NRI concept Not Required Indians...

Hindi isn't the only Indian language! I actually learned it from Bollywood, but I never felt any sort of obligation--Gugarati is my first language, and it's just as Indian as Hindi.

I would, however, like to inform ravi persad something: you're going to get a whole lot of Madhuri fans angry talking like that. There are many who are offended by the idea that Ashwariyah is superior to her. Personally I think it's silly to get so upset, but I consider Ashwariyah a poor actress, and her face doesn't change that. Madhuri is not my favorite actress, either, but she's certainly a talented one.

(Bollywood films certainly are cheesy, though. I tend to listen to the songs and not watch too many movies, but I've seen a good amount.)

Ok, now I've seen a lot more Hindi movies and I can say the following:

1) It is my opinion that Madhuri is a much better actress and dancer than Aishwarya. I personally find Madhuri more attractive, but again, that's subjective. Madhuri's eyes are very intelligent, playful and soulful.

2) There may be a big Gujarati film industry, I just haven't heard about it. I watch Namaste America and Showtime India on cable TV in the U.S. and all the Bollywood movies are in Hindi, hence the desire to learn the language of the movies I like. I hear there is a Tollywood and that there are lots of similar movies made in Telugu and Tamil and Malayalam. I also like the old Satyajit Ray movies, which of course, are in Bengali. The primary reason is to sing along with the Hindi movies - lol.

3) There are plenty of Bollywood movies that deal with serious political and social themes. Hey Ram, Dil Se, the Deepa Mehta movies, Aamir Khan's various historical dramas. The ounce of cheese is forgiven that may creep into any of these.

But that dog, Tuffy, pretty cute, huh? I wonder if that is the same dog as Madhuri had in Dil? LOL

*Love* those Bollywood flicks!
