how was he able to retain ownership of the company? That part doesn't make sense to me. The German psychiatrist put the wheels in motion and the papers ran that Norville was a nutcase so couldn't the board have simply had him institutionalized like they planned in the first place?

The Blue Letter that he was supposed to deliver to Musburger gave whoever was named president of the company after him a second chance. It was his last act as president and according to the by laws had to be honored.
