In this 1997 interview with Charlie Rose, Winona Ryder mentioned that she auditioned for the role in The Hudsucker Proxy that eventually went to Jennifer Jason leigh, and that it was the role she most regretted not getting.

Do you guys think she would have done a good job?
I like Winona (especially during that time in her career), however, I don't know if she could have pulled it off.

I really like her too. But Jennifer Jason Leigh was perfection in this role. Her energy is exuberant and I just can't see Winona pulling that off.

I can't quite picture Winona being that fiery.

Maybe the role actually would have been nice with someone less fiery. I didn't like Leigh that much.
