Who cares? Smoking was so much more back then. A big way of life.

It's *cigarettes, and smoking was huge back then. See the smoking going on in all the other Coen films set in earlier eras?

Because there's nothing to talk about.

In the late 1950's people smoked. Lots of them.

In fact, if there was no smoking in the film, I would probably come this this board and ask 'how come nobody smokes in the film?'

On the whole, smoking in films didn't really start becoming taboo until after about 2000, anyway.

Actually, if you compare this to movies from that era, The Hudsucker Proxy doesn't have all that much smoking.
