hadn't seen this in a long time...

but it happened to be on a movie channel last night. here are some of my observations:
1. it shows the hopelessness of the inner cities, which have been ruled by the far left democrats for decades. there's no way around it. the fact that gates' mother proclaims how incredible it is that he's 18 and alive to see that. amazing that this is what passes for accomplishments in the inner city.
2. agee's mother, at some point, whines about her free money from the government (i.e. the taxes you pay to our benevolent government, which is given to people who sit on their porch killing time) drops from $368 to $268 and "how can i live on $268?" granted she pursued a nurse assistant certification, which is great for her. she should be proud. however welfare has become so ingrained into some people that when it is reduced, they complain. i suppose they are also wondering why they don't get christmas bonuses like those people who work at real jobs
3. 2-parent households are the key. this doc doesn't state that, but it is clearly something you can imply. watching how these kids grew up (we are the same age) and comparing it to how i grew up, with 2 very involved parents, both constantly employed at good jobs, always took me to practices and attended EVERY game (but weren't yelling at officials or running onto the floor DURING a game to celebrate), it is a TOTALLY different childhood. i thank god every day that i had that support, which so many kids from the inner cities simply don't have because the fathers are absent, and somehow that is considered "cool" or at worst "acceptable" or expected. the rhetorical conversations gates mother had with the camera where she is somewhat questioning if he will make it thru college. ask my mother or father the day i left for college if there was any doubt i would do well and graduate, there would be no question that i would
4. i played against Agee. honestly i didn't remember him specifically but at the very end, when the text comes on showing what they're doing now (which was 1994) it mentions he hit a 30-foot buzzer beater. i was in that game, on the floor at that time. didn't expect to lose to arkansas state. here's a link with a neat little graph thing that you can put your pointer on and it shows teams and score.:

Good points.

It shows the hopelessness of the inner cities, and I think things have actually gotten worse.

America needs to have serious conversation about the plight of inner city African Americans, and the role generations of welfare has played in it.

Unfortunately, there are conflicting agendas, such as Black Lives Matter. They say its racist to point out that there is a problem in the first place.

Anyhow, this film breaks my heart.

well, when absentee parents are celebrated and accepted as a normal fact of life, you will never make any progress. so far there is no progress being made

Same old Trumpian B/S. No understanding or concept beyond the racist stereotypes.

Well wowjonesgg, why don't you enlighten us?

reply

Why don't I try to teach a parapelegic to tap dance? I don't have the time, and you don't have the willingness or brains. If you don't have enlightened intelligent black people in your sphere to rock some knowledge, that's because they frighten you
