Watch the third one second?

OK i ordered all 4 highlander movies but i've just read a post on amazon that says the third film-FINAL DIMENSION should be watched after the first film? is this true? and is the 4th film a prequel? all explanations will be appreciated.

reply

You can view the 3rd prior to watch the 2nd. It should be noted that Highlander 2 is not considered part of the Highlander canon which you will discover by watching Endgame which effectively removes Highlander 2 from any continuity.
There is no real or should I say proper continuity between the films and the producers have taken some liberties when making the sequels.
You can either watch it: Highlander - Highlander 2 or Highlander - Highlander 3 (skipping 2 entirelly) or Highlander - Highlander 3 - Highlander 2

All of the above basically revolve around Connor being among the last remaining immortals
Endgame basically follows the TV series universe which connects with the first film but ignores the end of it, there are still many immortals running around: Highlander (1st) - Highlander The Series - Endgame - The Source

If you want to watch (endure) The Source is entirely up to you.
But at the end of the day, don't worry too much about continuity... it is better to remain sane.

ha ha ok thanks man

I'm new to the series, and I gotta say thanx for the helpful post!
Would you consider the original and Endgame the only essential views of this series?

reply

Tough one but I would say that the only essential viewing is the first one and only the first one. It had a beginning, a middle and an end. The story of the immortals really does end in the first one. Take the rest for what they are, love their strengths and hate their weaknesses.

reply

This much is true, Highlander 2 is basically ignored by all other versions.

H3 follows H1 in the timeline, and so on. H3 is also made in the same kind of method that H1 was... flashbacks to earlier times, swordfighting in NYC, a young, beautiful, female, historical expert hot on his trail.

However, none of the Highlander sequels make any sense given the events of the original. H2 brings back immortals from the grave and reverses Conner's aging process (just a couple of the imponderables). H3 finds us with a few "lost" immortals and no connection to H2 whatsoever, and it goes on and on.

The bottom line is this, the original Highlander was complete, the story was finished. I mean, it's like trying to do Titanic 2, it's just pointless. The story has been told, there is nothing left to tell. One of the beautiful things about The Highlander was the way the story builds and events focus onto one, defining moment where... there can be only one... the final showdown and one immortal walks away with the prize.

And what were they saying with part two, three, four and five?

"There can be only one!!! ...unless a couple are hiding."

"The last one wins the prize... wait... PSYCHE! You thought you'd won it, didn't you? Wrong. Haha! Pulled a fast one on you! No, but seriously... this time you really will win the prize. No! We mean it! Come on! Just one more fight, we promise! Then, it really is yours! No foolin'!"

"Once your head is separated from your shoulders, THAT is the end! Well... unless a character is really cool and then we'll bring him back in a completely implausible manner! But, if your head comes off the second time, that really *is* it. Don't test us on this one... second time and that's it!"

Dumb.

Watch the original, then watch 3, then watch 4 then watch 5, then (if you must) watch 2, then regain a little of the glory of the original by watching some of the television episodes Then, throw every other Highlander movie away except the original, the others don't deserve to occupy the same collection as the original.

"HIGHLANDER!!! There can be only ONE... er... unless there are more..."

Hmm see I actually really liked the second movie, of course i was like seven or eight when it came out and I thought it was bitchin (I was three when the first one came out bwahahah). This movie sucked hugely, its actually one of my first memories of realizing that a movie can in fact be bad, this and the third robocop movie opened my child's eyes to suckitude. That said I am addicted to the franchise, comics, books, fanfics etc. You name it.

I know what it is like to be addicted to something. To love something so much that you are willing to overlook it's shortcomings, no matter how bad they are.

I love Blade and everything associated with it. I love the movies, I loved the series, I love the comics, I love it all.

Every Highlander movie finishes the story and with the exception of following up the first movie they have no connection to each other. I recommend you only watch the Endgame if you are a fan of the TV series and I recommend you only watch Highlander 3 if you hate yourself. The new versions of 2 have made that a watchable sequel, not as good as the original but a very fun movie to watch. 3 was like rubbing glass in your eyes and washing it out with lemon juice.

Good luck Newcomer in figuring out the Highlander franchise, the most improbable franchise in history. Each movie contradicts all previous installments so viewing order is arbitrary.

Highlander is about a bunch of immortals fighting throughout history until only one remains and he wins the Prize, some gift of power and knowledge, and he becomes mortal.

Highlander 2 tells us that the immortals actually came from another planet, or time before recorded history, bottom line, they came from somewhere else, which allows more of them to show up and fight over a new Prize. Now we're told the Prize can either be the mortality and the power or it can be to return home to the immortal homeworld. But it's full of retcons that make no sense like Connor and Ramirez knowing each other in the immortal homeworld before coming to Earth, even though in the first movie they met for the first time (guess they got amnesia). In the first movie Connor also claims he was born and raised in the MacLeod clan but the second movie says he was already an adult in the immortal homeworld before coming to Earth, so I guess the trip must have reverted him to a baby along the way. Unexplained. Even if that's all true, Connor didn't recognize Ramirez from the immortal homeworld when they met in the first movie but he does remember Katana from the immortal homeworld when he arrives in Highlander 2. I guess his amnesia was selective.

Highlander 3 ignores Highlander 2 by taking place earlier, 1994 instead of 2024. It also tells us that Connor's love interest from the first movie, Brenda, died in a car crash instead of being killed by solar radiation as stated in Highlander 2 so it again contradicts that movie. But Highlander 3 also contradicts the first movie by stating that when Connor killed the Kurgan he didn't actually win the Prize since there were still other immortals out there i.e. Kane and his cronies. When Connor kills Kane he wins the Prize for real.

The TV series has the same issue, it says the fight between Connor and the Kurgan happened but Connor didn't win the Prize because there were still other immortals left. Highlander 4 continues from the TV series with Duncan MacLeod. 4 also ignores 3 by stating that Connor has been in Sanctuary since the events of the first film which means his fight against Kane to win the Prize did not happen either.

I have yet to see Highlander 5 but from what I've read it apparently adds a new backstory to the immortals which is every bit as bad as the one presented in Highlander 2, and changes the nature of the Prize.

reply

If I remember correctly, Highland 2 said that they were reincarnated on Earth. They weren't sent as adults, but were literally reborn, which means they probably gained their original memories at the first quickenings.

Connor regains his memory of Zeist at the opera.

Now, bare with me on this. Now, im not saying Highlander 2 is a great movie. But I think the Origin they tell is vital to Highlander. It got butchered by that save the planet story like that was forced into the story.

Because of this the real story of the origin is somewhat lost and or miss told. I believe on the planet Ziest there was a civil war. Katana and his faction won. We see Ramirez and Conner perform some type of magical pact that bonds them using the Quickening. This is how Ramirez found him in the first movie. They want to end his control. When they get caught the priest exile them on earth. There they are reborn with the magic of the Quickening in different times. I believe that the Laws are inherent in the Quickening, so for something like fighting on Holy ground is impossible.

I read somewhere that Clancy Brown was going to reprise his role as the Kurgan. Kurgan worked for Katana and Katana was afraid of Conner and Ramirez coming back and starting the war all over. So he left with orders to Kill Kurgan and Conner and well, all the other rebels. I think this is how he knew who Conner was well before he became immortal.

I thihk by the end of part two he would have to go home and start the rebellion again. Defeat Katana and send him on the same hellish Quickening hunt that started it all. But that last parts more speculation than what I have info for.

The only one that really makes sense is the first one. I have all 5 films. Not seen The Source yet but it was given to me so I can't complain.

Final Dimension is the only Highlander sequel I like. While I agree there should have been only one but as far as I'm concerned, 1 and 3 only exist to me. Part 2, Endgame and The Source... never happened. At all.

Highlander 2 is the true sequel to the first as it's set in a post-Prize world.

Highlander - Highlander 3 - Highlander Endgame it fits that way !!

Highlander 2 is more like a off-serie film ! I could not enjoy this one, it's too much apocalyptic crap, and Sean Connery, what a useless role in the second....
