One thing that confused me... (boat scene)

When after the final fight, the beaten tanuki transformed into that giant head, parallel to that there was a folk-tale-ish scene with the boat departing to the land of the dead.
Was this meant to be metaphorical, or actually happening?

I think it was actually happening, it was kind of like... they went off to see if the folk tale was real. or they were just acting on a folk tale, and hoping it to be true. I think i just said the same thing twice but, REAL is what i took from it.

Hmmh... that might be true, thanks. I don't remember exactly how it ended now, I think it was either the narration saying sinking or saying actually sailing there...

Oh, the boat scene is a fantasy. All the rest, of course, is absolute literal truth.

My feeling was the boat would continue to sail, until the old tanuki died, upon which the ship would lose its form, and the others would sink into the waters.
