Best Ghibli film I've seen and second best I've seen by Takahata.

Easily superior to the more popular titles like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.

I agree that it's better than Mononoke and and on par with Spirited Away. It's a shame how under-appreciated this movie is. Most people just can't get over the fact that it's so different from other Ghibli films. I'm curious, what is your favorite Takahata film?

My favorite by Takahata is the even more underrated Chie the brat movie.

No way. It is very very good though but hardly top-tier stuff from Ghibli. Fireflies and Kaguya however are top-tier stuff from Takahata.

Haven't seen Kaguya but Grave of the Fireflies was pretty underwhelming. I didn't dislike it but it didn't live up to the hype at all. Barefoot Gen is superior.

It is but the manga from what I got a chance to read is even more so. It actually goes in detail about how harsh it was for Gen and his family being anti war.
