On the Heavenly Creatures fan mailing list people used to cite Rope and Swoon, both about Leopold and Loeb. I always thought Picnic at Hanging Rock had an atmosphere most like HC, although it is also very much like a Hitchcock film. Another film that I think "goes" with this one is The Silent Twins. I also got mild HC vibes from Les Enfants Terribles.

Told largely from the point of view of the victim's family, but also others. Very well acted. Can't understand why I never heard of it before this month. Did they not advertise it? Was it never released to theaters?

You want films based on serial killers, you have zodiac, based on the zodiac killer, see no evil based on the moors murders, appropriate adult based on the Wests, Dr Crippen, psycho based on Ed Gein, 10 rillington place based on John Christie, from hell loosely based on Jack the Ripper and texas chainsaw massacre was based also on Gein. You also have some others which are extremely loosely based on killers like mum and dad
