This is not a lesbian film!!

Why do all of the LGBTQ sites include THIS movie on the lists for "best LGBTQ movie" ? The two girls in the film did not identify as lesbians, to themselves or anyone else. When Juliet is going down on Paula, she doesn't imagine Juliet, she imagines Orson Wells! It was a very strong, close friendship - and because of the extreme homophobia in New Zealand at the time, everyone assumed they were lesbians and tried to "cure" them, or at least separate them.

This is a story about an obsessive friendship that goes horribly wrong. But at the time, all the papers sensationalised the murder these two girls committed as the work of "crazy, psycho lesbian killers". To list this movie as a "Lesbian" or queer film is wrong because the girls were not actually gay.

reply

Doesn't matter if they imagined men druing their sexual intercourse. They were still having sex with one another. If that isn't gay then I don't know what is.

And how do you know that these two women aren't actually gay?

reply

Because the real life killers confirmed it. Despite having an obsessive and strong friendship with one another, neither one of them identified as being gay. Yes, film is in part a school girl story about homophobia during the 1950s, but it isn't a coming out story or a romantic love affair between two women. There are many other films like that, such as Oranges are not the only fruit, Loving Annabelle and Lost and Delirous.

reply

They both confirmed it? No they didn't. Pauline never talked to the press, but she did have homosexual relations while she attended university. Juliet(Anne) did deny it all, but the woman is a devout mormon. Plus she's never been attached to a man. Never married and basically spent the last decades with the same female friend. We'll knever know the truth, but there is a possibility that both aren't as straight as they make out to be. Plus, they got a lot of hate for being ''murderous lesbians'' while being young. No way that they want to be indentified with that even now.

reply

The film did allude to homosexuality, and that was expressed by the close up of the doctor's mouth mouthing the word after Pauline's examination. The girls were also seen engaging in sexual activity with each other, even if mimicking their favorite film stars or fantasy beings. They were still very close to lesbian sexual activity, even though Pauline had a brief fling with the male border. She wasn't enjoying it anyway and was imagining images of Juliet in her mind, in Borovnia.

Lest we forget, many girls in their teens crush on other women but as you iterate, that doesn't make them gay. I had a crush on my 28 year-old Biology teacher but I never went on to bed a girl. Adolecents experiment - it is both natural and healthy but give me a strong-armed man every day!

Sorry to appear ignorant but could you define the abbrieviation LGBTQ for me? Thanks, not familiar with that one 

I think same sex adolescent crushes (on an older teacher, for example) are very touching and sweet.

"LGBTQ" is the acronym for Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgendered-Queer.

I wonder how many more letters it will have taken on in the next 5 years?

It is like an alphabet soup Mr. H and is confounded and absurd. They aren't doing themselves any big favors here, and I find it frustrating how most gay people get lumped into these categories as though they are all part of the LGBTQ community.

Yep, I am inclined to agree with high priestess, I too had crushes on other girls in my school when I was in my early teens, to the point where I wanted to kiss them, I'm 33 now and don't have any homosexual tendencies whatsoever, I'm completely into men. It's a stage most girls go through. Some admit it, some don't.

I do however, believe that these girls had some sort of attraction to each other. Maybe not completely gay, but borderline homoerotic, nonetheless.
