'We need these guys alive' line

When his men are shooting up the place when they track Lambert down to that bar/brothel Denis Leary says "We need these guys alive". which stood out to me because he was only looking for Lambert at that point. It wasn't until the next scene or thereafter that it was explained to him he needed both men. He didn't even know he was chasing two guys when he said it.
