The ending

Everytime I watch this movie-the ending changes. I saw once where Tess dies in the end due to cancer or something like that. SHe knew she was going to die and that is why she made the president promise to look out after Doug. Most of the time I see the ending where she is being wheeled out of the hospital after her ordeal.

Has anyone else seen this alternate ending?

reply

The only ending I've EVER seen is Tess being wheeled out of the hospital....

I've seen this moving dozens of times and have never seen different ending.

I haven't seen the movie in a long time and maybe I'm wrong, but as far as I remember, both things happens. She talk to the president telling him to look after Doug (and she hangs the phone abruptly leaving the prez almost speechless XD) and then comes the scene when she is carried away from the hospital in the wheelchair by Doug.

i just watched it today on hulu and it ended with her leaving the hospital but about 3 weeks ago i saw it with tess dying at the end. there is no credited alternate ending though so i don't know what's up.

Woot

Just finished watching the movie and the ending was the same as always. Tess throwing kisses to her admirers and her secret service guys all around her. We only know she has a brain tumor, because we found that out during the kidnapping when the FBI guy says she was on medicine for the dizziness and asked if anyone knew about the tumor.

Ooo creepy thread time.

Just watched this movie and I came on here to see why they wrote in the brain tumor as the film was very enjoyable but the tumor I felt was unnessosery. Have her die at the end would have made the film sad, the wheel chair is what I saw but her dieing would have fitted in to the whole movie

You are completely RIGHT!!!!!
I have seen the version where the TV broadcasts show the passing of the former First Lady. And Douglas is at the funeral I think.
Haven't seen that version for a long time however.
And I kind of liked it.
It was hinting at a Son losing his mother.

Here in the UK, both versions have been shown . I prefer the one where she dies as it makes sense , although the alternative ending (the happy one) is predominantly shown.

The happier ending is actually the one that makes sense. Why? Doug was willing to sacrifice his entire career for Tess, by shooting Earl's toes. If Tess would have died, and the criminals not punished ( because of evidence gathered under duress), it would have been in vain. When she told the President that he is like a son, and you will make sure he is taken care of it is significant. I suspect that means he will get pardoned and not face prosecution for shooting Earl ( and of course, remain with the .Secret Service ( and Tess) until she dies). Why would he do that? Because the President would not be in office without Tess. Finally Tess is not stupid. She knows that the difference between Doug and everyone else ( her son included), was the willingness to sacrifice for her. So whatever time Tess has left will be spent molding Doug into the kind of man that she knows that he is. She basically set the wheels in motion to go on to better things then a Secret Service Agent.

davidjanuzbrown, I'm with you on all points. I don't know how much trouble Doug would have been in, in this movie universe. I mean his boss was just telling him to stop shooting Earl's toes without too much passion or conviction.

I did enjoy how Tess had the President basically wrapped around her finger and more-or-less hung up on him after the hospital phone call.

The mention of the tumor during the search always bothered me and seemed un-necessary because the only ending I have ever seen, including my DVD copy, was the happy ending of Tess being wheeled out of the hospital to the cheering crowd and the news reporters. If there is (and there appears to be) an alt ending, then the mention of the tumor would make some sense. But I personally think that would be a horrible ending to a rather cute and mostly up-beat movie.

My 2-pennies...

Totally agree. Tess telling the prez that Doug is like a son to her is the payoff to the entire film.

I've never seen any other ending than the one of her leaving the hospital (which I thought was the perfect balance), but I also simply feel it was the right choice. Showing her death is too heavy. The version I've seen, she is alive and bright and we know she faces a dark future, but we know Doug will be with her.

Other versions just seem unnecessary to me. We don't need to see that -- we know all we need to. Doug is her real son. They love each other and will be there til the end.
