Spoiler Alert: I need some plot clarification

Why did Earl's sister and husband kidnap Tess and why did Earl go along with it? I think I totally missed this during the movie?

It is never explained but I suspect they were naive/greedy/desparate enough to think they could make a fortune and get away with it.

Also, Earl is a very weak man and easily pushed. Even when things are his fault, he says someone else made him do it.

To make a quick buck as a ransom demand but that plot point was so weak you think Earl would get caught sooner or later.

Simple: they do it for money. Earl is in addition hinted at as being weak earlier on so it's a believable plan.

Earl isn't just shown to be weak, but that (worse) he doesn't care a moment about Tess or what happens to her.

It's a great inversion of Doug -- Doug seems to be antagonistic to Tess but he adores her. The chauffeur seems trusted (Tess goes to bat for him many times) but he is not a good man and willingly colluded in her kidnapping and living death.
