'Great Day' revisited

A friend of mine said he'd read a review of a new film with this plot idea:

An autograph collector has set as his goal to get the autographs of all of the musicians in the great photograph of Art Kane's in "Great Day In Harlem". This collector has amassed all the autographs but one: Benny Golson's. He hears that Benny is in New York, and flies there to try to find him and get his autograph. My friend is sure that he read that the actor playing the autograph collector is Tom Hanks, and that the movie is "The Terminal".

I have been anxiously awaiting the release of this film, and have been reading advance promos about it and have seen several trailers. In none of these did I find any reference to "Great Day In Harlem". Was my friend mistaken? If this is indeed a film plot, what is the title of the movie?

reply

Your friend is correct. It's not mentioned in the movie because it's a relatively minor part of the plot. But watching "The Terminal" did lead me to rent "A Great Day In Harlem", which I enjoyed a great deal.

How can it be a "minor part of the plot" when it's the reason he winds up in the terminal in the first place?

Hmmm, it's over three years later from the original posting and I wasn't aware there was any connection between The Terminal with Tom Hanks and the photo Great Day in Harlem.

They really missed marketing the movie to jazz fans if that connection is part of the movie.
