The very end scenes, vulgar...........

Ok, aside from bad acting, the stereotyping that all lesbians have to dress and look like men (yes I know it was a group of real lesbians in the film - but lipsticks like me are real lesbians too), what really offended me was the very ending of everyone having sex.

Why did we need a sex collage at the end? I found that just extremely offensive and so un-called for. It's almost as if it said, "Well really, to summarize this film, it was just about getting to see everyone naked and getting it on". What a horrible ending to a horrible film!

BLEH!!!!!!

I don't see what was wrong with some of the characters being a little butch, though not all "dressed like men", early 90's fashion had alot to do with dress sense. Besides most films that deal with lesbianism tend to lean towards femme characters, so I thought it was kind of refreshing.

I have to admit that I did like the sex scenes at the end, so it might not have had much (if anything) to do with the plot, but decent dyke sex is a rarity on celuloid. And I don't mind a bit of vulgarity here and there...
I do agree with you on the bad acting though, I did cringe my way through the "talking heads" scenes- ouch!

reply

Nothing wrong with vulgar.
But It really didnt do it for me at all, it seemed totally out of place and forced almost like the cast and crew were rubbing our noses in their sexuallity.
I like to see decent lesbian sex like everyone else but I am afraid this was not to my taste at all.
I loved the film and the bad acting.

Sweetie please! From one lesbian to another! Leave "Go Fish", all the hardworking dykes that where in this moive and Rose Troche alone! This film was in my opinion well done, funny and artistic in it's own way! WE NEED more lesbian independent films mostly lesbian films about black women!!!! Your being to picky as a moive viewer...open up and understand that alot of hard work goes into making an independent film - even getting the funding lol. If you want to see a really extremely offensive film try "She Hate Me" by that *beep* Spike Lee!

reply

Just out of curiousty what did you find offensive about She Hate Me?

This is coming from a gay man, so... lesbian = do nothign for me. So this is pretty much a completely objective view. This movie... gracious. Awful. I understna dhtta independent film is some tough crap to make/get funding for/find decent actors for/etc. But lack of funding does not excuse crappy dialogue and poor direction. This is yet another queer film that falls under the category of "poorly-made-'art-for-the-sake-of-art'-gay-film." I agree, more lesbian films do need ot be made... but for the love-of-pete... lesbians have more dykesplotation films than they know what to do with. Do a little google searching and I promise more will come up.

And to the original poster: try to look at it this way: this is the lesbian equivilent to Queer As Folk. QAF never meant to emulatethe entire gay community, merely a small group of friends and their lives. This is kind of the same thing. You also have to take into account that this is still very much under the influence of the lesbian "grunge" look that hit hard in the early 90s and stuck around for... *sighs* waaaaayyyy too long. :) The final sex scene was kind of a... ice cream cone to the audience. Unfortunatley, it did seem very forced and seemingly unnatural for these characters. But, it was kind of a "now, you've all been good little girls, sitting through our little movie... now here's some F---ing. Thanks!"

[insert something witty and philosophical here]

Couldn't agree more. I was coming out when the 90's were abuzz with lez movies (and by that I mean there were about three, but LOTS of articles written about them) and i gotta say cringe-worthy though some of the acting may have been, at least it felt real, and at least I felt represented. (hell, the acting is no worse than a lot of what was coming out during the "Indie Renaissance") And the sex scene you're so quick to disparage was a REVOLUTION in it's time. How about a little respect for the fact that it too was honestly done? (and PS hot.)

Don't get me wrong, I love me some L Word (thanks again Ms Troche) but that show is way less real in it's depiction of lesbians than Go Fish; the closest thing to a butch girl never leaves the house without eyeliner.

Do you want lesbian film making or the Spice Girls?

reply

What sex scene collage at the end?? I saw it on Logo the other night. Was it cut??

reply

This is what happens when lesbians have unregulated access to the internet.

the end scenes are an orgy? I came away from the film with memories of a couple going for walks together and buying take way coffees.

Racy stuff indeed.

You would only find the sex in the movie offensive if you didn't wan tto see Lesbians having sex. If you don't want to see Lebbians having sex watch the L Word.

reply

... you don't want to see Lebbians having sex watch the L Word.

You do mean don't watch "The L Word" right? Because 10 minutes of that show has more on-screen sex than any 3 "Go Fish"es.

I saw previews of this movie before the beginning of the movie 'The Sum of Us'. Ewww, gross... It made me laugh to hear the character in 'The Sum of Us', a young man brought home to the house of someone he met in a gay bar, shocked to find that the father of the family keeps waiting on them hand and foot, say, 'This is too domestic for me. It's just not sexy.' Then he had to leave because it wasn't very erotic to be so 'accepted'. And to think he was going home to his own family who so strongly disapproved of him! What a weird weird world where that's what's necessary - The acting out, the 'oohh, aren't we nasty?' feeling I got from watching the previews. I really wish I could have taken the gay guy by the hand and pulled him from one film into the other and said, 'Here, you want to get turned on by feeling oh so nasty and dirty, come join in this movie instead... you'll feel right at home in 'Go Fish'....

Yes, it's surprising but adults do have sex with each other. Even gay ones.
