Bad Acting

You know what I crave? Lesbian movies with good actors.

reply

yeah the acting felt pretensious. It felt like they were reading out lines in a drama class.

reply

Sure, but it beats any lesbian "literature" novel out there! I don't think Guinevere Turner's writing has improved much from what she has written for the L word. Episodes that she has written have that "Go Fish" wooden read of lines feel. Even a great actress like Jennifer Beals seems to struggle with making Turner's writing become real and invigorating.

I was really disappointed by this movie in terms of acting. Does anyone know of a well played, interesting lesbian movie? Even one with lesbians in it?

reply

but you have to remember that the budget for "Go Fish" was extremely low&they funded it themselves. All the actors are Rose Troche's friends&you cant expect them to be professional actors.

reply

one of the worst movies. ever. I mean, come on, it's HORRID lol. we need better gay movies out there than this crap.

reply

.....this is undoubtedly THE WORST movie ever made. Blaming a low
budget is lame. Everyone here has got it right....put the blame where it's due....on the "acting",
or lack there of.

Watch Bar Girls.

Thank you for stating that ashtraygirl182! Think people!

Well, maybe she should have held an audition, instead of just asking her friends. There are a lot of excellent actors out there who are willing to work for free. And besides...isn't that what directors are supposed to do? Help the actors do their job better? Sorry, but I can excuse low production costs, but not bad acting, in any case.

reply

your budget doesn't make you do really bad, slow pans from one character to the other, so that fo @ 10 seconds all you can see if the out of focus background. it also doesnt make the camera stand too close to the actors to stage the scene and get them both in the shot, so that all you see are the noses of the twop actresses.

maybe they should have read a book about cinematography...or maybe, watched a movie...any movie, just to see how they approached something like having 2 characters on screen at once.

and maybe, rehearse? that is free.

i know about this. i am a film student. i am sure the budget for go fish is higher than all of my films combined, and i at least know how to stage a scene. its not like you need a degree from yale acting school to know how to get a performance or stage a scene...

i have to admit, its frustrating, watching something this, well, bad, while i and many of my frien ds struggle to get our 1st film made.

Depends on your definition of what "bad acting" is. I absolutely adore this movie, and I have found over the years that it's rather "love it" or "hate it" - there is no in between.

Just a note so that those of us that love it aren't forgotten.

reply

Thanks for speaking for those of us who love it. It's been in my collection for a number of years. I like the college film feel to it. I think addresses some real concerns for women, lesbian or straight. I also think the love story is sweet. But it is an atypical movie so you do either love it or hate it.

reply

Loved It.

To be honest, I found it hard to keep my eyes open, or refrain from hiding behind the nearest pillow on my couch. The bad acting made me cringe so much... A waste of money from Filmflex, and I looked forward to watching it too. :<

Personally, I think it's offensive to lesbians to suggest that someone so unforgivably UGLY as Ely was allowed to have a love interest in the movie! She should be put on an island to live with wolves! But apart from that, I think the movie is brilliantly ridiculous, and fabulous to laugh at over a few drinks...Other than that it's just your average lesbians trying to be profound..Particularly liked jury scene for added ridiculousness!

Oh lordy...

There are 2 kinds of movies in this world, the kind I liked enough to call up, say, a close friend, and say "hey, I saw this film, it was great, wanna see it?"
And the kind that I would be embarassed to be responsible for making a friend watch.

This one would have had me blushing.
I know it was a good effort, but it was painfully "oooh, we're creative lesbians, see how arty we are" which is unfortunate but can be survivable.
The fact is that I didn't like those people. They annoyed me, I waited to see them do something interesting (or say something believable and natural) and it just didn't happen. I didn't care what happened to them and it offends me (as a lesbian) slightly to make a film about people purely because they are gay. I am more interesting than just my sexuality, I suspect most lesbians are.

I really really wanted to like this film and I still failed to.

The acting in this movie was really poor. I don't buy the excuse that the cast were amateurs - any good director can get a good performance out of even a complete novice. I've been watching the 'Pusher' movies recently. Most of the actors are novices but the director get incredible performances out of them.
The lesbian community will not be taken seriously if we don't start being more honest about poor movies like this.

reply

I liked the performances. I thought they were good in a naturalistic sort of way. I believed them and was interested in seeing what would happen to the characters.
